What is Barre?

Barre is a form of exercise that has been inspired by the technical aspects that comprise the 'barre' section of a ballet class. It has since been adapted to include elements of pilates, yoga and low impact exercises. The class aims to target every muscle group in the body and although it may be low impact, these classes are considered to be of a high intensity. Barre classes are designed to develop agility, flexibility and strength through a series of co-ordinated movements and small isometric movements including light weights and high repetitions.

Some of the benefits of taking regular barre classes include:

  • improved cardiovascular endurance

  • improved muscular endurance

  • promotion of bone density

  • improved flexibility, strength and co ordination

  • a better understanding of posture and how to correct stance

  • increased body awareness

  • stronger core and posterior chain

  • functional training elements of the class will make day to day activities appear easier

And lastly, you'll probably feel pretty amazing and a little smug after a barre class, that's the best bit! Barre is the perfect workout to complement high impact exercises such as running or HIIT. You may be looking for something with a little more intensity than Pilates or maybe you just want to try something new. You do not need to have had any prior experience in Ballet, Pilates or Yoga to enjoy a Barre class.
